Blackjack terms describe the state of a hand and the actions permitted by a specific table's rules. Knowing the vocabulary makes an explanation clearer without predicting a result.
Basic actions
To hit is to request another card; to stand is to stop taking cards for that hand. A bust occurs when the hand's value exceeds 21. Splitting and doubling are additional actions only when permitted under the relevant conditions, and they can require extra stake.
Soft and hard hands
A soft hand contains an ace currently usable as 11 without the total exceeding 21. A hard hand has no ace with that flexibility at its current total. The old article incorrectly described every hard hand as one that must bust after any extra card; that is not the definition.
Natural blackjack and table differences
A two-card ace with a ten-value card is commonly called a natural blackjack, subject to the game's rules. Payouts and dealer procedures can vary. A glossary cannot replace that rule set, and memorizing terms does not establish a winning system or a guaranteed profitable session.
