Roulette combines a numbered wheel with a betting layout. A useful introduction starts by identifying the exact wheel and the payout rules, rather than assuming every version is identical.

Know the layout

A standard single-zero wheel contains 0 and the numbers 1 through 36. A standard double-zero wheel adds 00. The old article's reference to numbers through 37 was inaccurate. Zero pockets are separate from the familiar red-or-black, odd-or-even and low-or-high groupings used on the layout.

Inside and outside selections

Inside bets cover particular numbers or small adjoining groups. Outside bets cover broader groups, such as red or black and dozens. Covering more numbers changes both the probability of a successful selection and the payout. It does not remove the effect of the zero pocket or pockets.

Check table-specific conditions

Minimum stakes, chip handling and special rules can differ between tables and versions. Do not assume that all outside bets have the same payout or that every table combines minimums in the same way. A clear rules display is more useful than a betting system presented as a shortcut to certainty.
